Daylight Saving Time 2026: How Market Hours Shift
Stock exchanges never change their local opening times — the NYSE always opens at 9:30 a.m. New York time and London at 8:00 a.m. London time. What changes is the difference between time zones. Because different regions switch on different dates, the autumn is when traders following foreign markets most often get caught out.
Who changes clocks, and when
| Region | 2026 change | New offset |
|---|---|---|
| Australia (Sydney) | Clocks went forward Sun, Oct 4 | AEDT, UTC+11 |
| UK (London) | Back 1 hour Sun, Oct 25 | GMT, UTC+0 |
| Europe (Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich) | Back 1 hour Sun, Oct 25 | CET, UTC+1 |
| US & Canada (New York, Toronto) | Back 1 hour Sun, Nov 1 | EST, UTC−5 |
| India, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore | No daylight saving | Unchanged |
NYSE opening time around the world — three periods
The NYSE and Nasdaq open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. New York time. Here is when that opening bell rings elsewhere:
| NYSE open (9:30 a.m. NY) | Until Oct 24 | Oct 25 – Oct 31 | From Nov 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | 2:30 p.m. | 1:30 p.m. | 2:30 p.m. |
| Frankfurt / Paris | 3:30 p.m. | 2:30 p.m. | 3:30 p.m. |
| India (IST) | 7:00 p.m. | 7:00 p.m. | 8:00 p.m. |
| Dubai | 5:30 p.m. | 5:30 p.m. | 6:30 p.m. |
| Singapore / Hong Kong | 9:30 p.m. | 9:30 p.m. | 10:30 p.m. |
| Tokyo | 10:30 p.m. | 10:30 p.m. | 11:30 p.m. |
So for European traders the US open moves an hour earlier for one week only, then returns to normal. For traders in India and the rest of Asia, the US session moves one hour later from November 1 and stays there until US clocks spring forward on March 14, 2027.
The London–New York overlap gets longer for a week
The overlap between London (8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) and New York is the busiest window of the global trading day. Normally it lasts two hours. From October 25 to October 31, 2026, it stretches to three:
| Period | Overlap (London time) | Overlap (New York time) | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Until Oct 24 | 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. | 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. | 2 hours |
| Oct 25 – Oct 31 | 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. | 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. | 3 hours |
| From Nov 1 | 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. | 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. | 2 hours |
The Frankfurt (Xetra, 9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.) overlap with New York follows the same pattern: two hours normally, three hours during the gap week.
European and Asian markets in Indian time
India does not use daylight saving, so European opening times shift for Indian traders on October 25:
| Exchange (local open) | Until Oct 24 (IST) | From Oct 25 (IST) |
|---|---|---|
| London (8:00 a.m.) | 12:30 p.m. | 1:30 p.m. |
| Frankfurt / Paris (9:00 a.m.) | 12:30 p.m. | 1:30 p.m. |
| Tokyo (9:00 a.m.) | 5:30 a.m. | 5:30 a.m. |
| Hong Kong (9:30 a.m.) | 7:00 a.m. | 7:00 a.m. |
| Sydney (10:00 a.m.) | 4:30 a.m. since Oct 4 (was 5:30 a.m. before Australia’s change) | |
Practical tips for the changeover weeks
- Re-check alerts and alarms. Price alerts or reminders set for a fixed local time may now fire an hour early or late relative to the market.
- Watch economic releases. US data such as jobs reports come out at 8:30 a.m. New York time — that’s 12:30 p.m. in London during the gap week instead of the usual 1:30 p.m.
- Don’t trust memory for a week. Use a clock that calculates each exchange in its own time zone — like our live market clock, which handles every change automatically.
